Multimodal solutions aren't always the right answer — for straightforward point-to-point shipments where a single mode clearly wins on both cost and time, adding complexity for its own sake doesn't help. Similar rail and multimodal land routes exist or are developing on other major overland corridors, and it's worth periodically checking whether a route you've always shipped by sea or air has a multimodal alternative that's become viable, since these routes and their commercial viability do change over time as infrastructure investment continues.
Cost allocation across a multimodal shipment can be less transparent than a single-mode booking, since the combined rate you're quoted bundles together the cost of each individual leg along with the carrier's coordination margin for managing the handoffs. For businesses evaluating whether a multimodal option is genuinely cost-effective compared to arranging the same combination of modes independently through separate bookings, it's worth asking your forwarder for a rough breakdown of what each leg would cost on its own, so you can judge whether the bundled convenience is worth any premium over self-arranging the same combination — sometimes it is, given the coordination and liability benefits, and sometimes independently arranged legs genuinely work out cheaper if you have the internal capacity to manage the coordination yourself.
As with single-mode shipping, it's worth revisiting your routing choices periodically rather than assuming a multimodal solution that made sense a few years ago remains the best option today. New rail corridors, changes in air cargo capacity and pricing, and shifts in port infrastructure can all change the relative attractiveness of different multimodal combinations over time, and forwarders who actively track these developments are often able to suggest a better-optimized routing than the one a shipper has defaulted to simply because it worked adequately in the past and was never actively reconsidered.
