Volumetric weight is still 50kg regardless of what's inside, so this shipment would be charged on the higher volumetric figure of 50kg, effectively doubling the freight cost relative to what the actual weight alone might have suggested.
For businesses shipping the same product configuration repeatedly, it's worth asking your forwarder whether a negotiated minimum chargeable weight threshold, rather than the standard per-shipment calculation, might apply to your regular volume — some carriers offer more favorable terms for consistent, predictable shippers than the default rate card would suggest. It's also worth periodically re-measuring your actual packaging rather than relying on figures from months or years ago, since even small changes to a box size or filler material can shift a shipment across the actual-versus-volumetric threshold without anyone noticing until the next invoice arrives higher than expected.
When requesting an air freight quote, always provide both actual weight and full dimensions per package rather than just total weight — a forwarder can only give you an accurate, all-in quote with both figures, and finding out about a volumetric weight adjustment after the shipment has already moved is a common and avoidable source of billing disputes.

For businesses that ship a consistent product mix repeatedly, it can be worth working with a packaging engineer or your forwarder to specifically model the cost impact of a redesigned carton against the cost of the redesign itself — sometimes a modest investment in tooling for a more compact package pays back within a relatively small number of shipments once the volumetric weight savings are calculated across expected shipping volume. This kind of analysis is rarely done proactively, since packaging and logistics decisions are often made by different teams within a business, but bringing the two together specifically around this calculation is one of the more concrete, quantifiable cost optimizations available to a regular air freight shipper.
